In 1830, during a visit to northern Georgia, Roswell King identified the potential for constructing a cotton mill along Vickery Creek. Noticing that the surrounding land was ideal for plantations, he envisioned combining cotton processing with production in one area.

By the mid-1830s, King returned and established North Georgia’s largest mill – Roswell Mill. He relocated 36 African slaves from his coastal plantation and purchased another 42 skilled carpenter slaves in Savannah to construct not only the mills but also infrastructure, residences, worker apartments, and additional buildings essential for developing this new town.

These enslaved individuals brought their Geechee culture’s unique language and religious traditions from coastal regions to northern Georgia.
